Ultion vs ABS vs Yale: The Working Locksmith's Anti-Snap Comparison

TS007 3-star cylinders compared head-to-head: security ratings, key control, guarantees, price and which one our engineers actually fit on doors across West London, Berkshire and Buckinghamshire.

Why anti-snap locks matter in 2026

Lock snapping is still the most common method of entry for UPVC and composite door burglaries in the UK. A standard euro cylinder protrudes slightly from the door handle; a burglar grips it with mole grips, applies leverage, and snaps the cylinder in under 10 seconds. Once snapped, the internal cam is exposed and the door unlocks.

TS007 3-star anti-snap cylinders defeat this attack with a sacrificial section — a weak point built into the front of the cylinder that breaks away before the locking cam, leaving the door still locked. The burglar is left holding a broken piece of metal and a locked door.

But not all 3-star cylinders are equal. The TS007 standard is a baseline. Above it sit independent certifications like Sold Secure Diamond, cash-backed security guarantees, and registered key-control systems that prevent anonymous duplication. This guide compares the three brands we fit most often: Ultion, ABS (Avocet), and Yale Superior.

What our engineers see in the field, day after day, fitting and replacing these cylinders on real doors across West London and Berkshire.

Ultion

£££

Ultion by Brisant-Secure

5/5

Ultion is the cylinder we fit most often for customers who want the absolute best. It holds Sold Secure Diamond — a step above the TS007 3-star baseline — and Brisant-Secure backs it with a £1,000 guarantee: if a burglar defeats the cylinder, they pay out. The key-control system means no one can walk into a high-street key-cutter and duplicate your key without proof of address and ownership.

Best for

Maximum security, key control, insurance requirements

Pros

  • £1,000 security guarantee if broken into via the lock
  • Sold Secure Diamond — highest independent rating
  • Key must be registered to your address — no rogue duplication
  • Lifetime warranty on mechanics
  • Available with smart-lock integration (Ultion Nuki)

Cons

  • Most expensive of the three
  • Replacement keys require ID and registration — slightly slower

ABS

££

Avocet ABS by Master Key Systems

4.5/5

ABS (Avocet Break Secure) is the hidden gem of the TS007 3-star world. It meets the same Sold Secure Diamond standard as Ultion, uses an equally effective sacrificial snap section, and costs £20–£40 less fitted. The only meaningful trade-off is the lack of a cash-backed guarantee and no native smart-lock cylinder. For customers who want near-Ultion protection without the premium, ABS is our go-to recommendation.

Best for

Strong security at a mid-range price point

Pros

  • Sold Secure Diamond certified
  • Robust snap-resistant sacrificial front section
  • Good key-control system with registered duplication
  • Lifetime warranty
  • Slightly lower fitted cost than Ultion

Cons

  • No cash security guarantee
  • Smart-lock integration not available
  • Less brand recognition than Yale for resale value

Yale

£

Yale Superior 1-Star / 3-Star

4/5

Yale Superior is the sensible entry point into anti-snap security. It carries the TS007 3-star badge, so it satisfies every major UK insurer, and the Yale brand name gives buyers confidence. Where it falls short of Ultion and ABS is in the extras: no Diamond rating, no registered key control, and no cash guarantee. For a straightforward upgrade from a vulnerable standard cylinder, Yale Superior works. For households with high-value contents or repeated burglary risk, we steer customers toward ABS or Ultion.

Best for

Budget-conscious upgrades from standard cylinders

Pros

  • Trusted household name — excellent resale recognition
  • Widely available and competitively priced
  • Yale Conexis smart-lock option available
  • Meets TS007 3-star for insurance compliance
  • 10-year manufacturer warranty

Cons

  • No Sold Secure Diamond rating
  • No registered key control — keys can be copied anonymously
  • No security guarantee
  • Slightly softer steel composition than Ultion or ABS

What to expect during an anti-snap upgrade

1

Measurement

We measure the exact centre-to-end dimensions of your existing cylinder — typically 35/35, 40/50, 45/50 or similar. Getting this right is critical: too short and the cam is exposed; too long and the cylinder is a snapping target.

2

Removal

The old cylinder is removed through the door handle after loosening the centre fixing screw. Most take 2–3 minutes. If the cylinder has already been snapped, we use extraction tools to remove the remaining piece.

3

Fitting & testing

The new anti-snap cylinder is inserted, the fixing screw tightened, and every locking point tested: key turn, handle lift, deadbolt throw, and multipoint engagement. We check the door alignment too — a dropped door stresses the new cylinder.

4

Key handover & paperwork

You receive all keys, a VAT invoice, and a 12-month parts & labour guarantee from us. For Ultion and ABS, we also register your keys to your address so no one can duplicate them without ID.

Frequently asked questions

What is TS007 3-star and why does it matter?

TS007 is the UK standard for euro cylinders. The 3-star rating means the cylinder has passed rigorous testing for anti-snap, anti-pick, anti-drill and anti-bump resistance. Most UK home insurers now require TS007 3-star on UPVC and composite doors. Without it, your policy may not pay out after a break-in.

Can I fit an anti-snap cylinder myself?

Measuring the cylinder correctly is the hard part — you need the internal and external dimensions from the centre of the fixing screw to each end. Get it wrong and the cylinder is either too short (vulnerable to gripping) or too long (vulnerable to snapping). A locksmith measures, supplies and fits in about 30 minutes with a 12-month guarantee.

How much does it cost to upgrade to an anti-snap cylinder?

Supply and fitted prices start at around £89 for a budget TS007 3-star cylinder, £120–£160 for ABS, and £140–£180 for Ultion. The price includes measurement, removal of the old cylinder, fitting the new one, testing all locking points, and a VAT receipt.

Will an anti-snap cylinder stop all break-ins?

No lock is invincible. Anti-snap cylinders stop the most common UK attack method — lock snapping — which accounts for an estimated 70%+ of UPVC door break-ins. They also resist picking, bumping and drilling. A determined attacker may still break glass or find another entry point, but anti-snap cylinders remove the easiest route.

How do I know if my current cylinder is anti-snap?

Look for a 3-star kitemark or the TS007 logo on the face of the cylinder. Standard cylinders have no marking, 1-star cylinders resist picking but not snapping, and 3-star cylinders resist all common attacks. If you're unsure, a 15-minute locksmith visit will identify what you have and what you need.

Do I need to change my door handles too?

Not necessarily, but it's recommended. Security handles with reinforced backplates prevent a burglar from snapping the cylinder by crushing the handle first. If your handles are more than 5 years old or feel loose, upgrading both together gives the best protection.

Which anti-snap lock do you recommend most often?

For absolute maximum security: Ultion. For the best balance of protection and value: ABS. For a budget-friendly, insurance-compliant upgrade from a standard cylinder: Yale Superior. We carry all three on every van and will talk you through the trade-offs on site.
